Are you creative enough?
I’m not referring to any kind of artistic ability here. I mean do you take the time to use your natural creativity? If not, your churning, bubbling inner volcano probably has you feeling a bit frustrated.
The answer is easy. Let your creative volcano blow.
Okay, what am I talking about? No, it’s not a geology lesson, it’s about recognizing that in spite of what your 7th grade art teacher might have said, we are ALL creative. And, we must regularly use our natural creativity. If we don’t, we suffer. We don’t release the ideas we have inside. We don’t realize our full potential. We cheat the world of what we have to offer. And our inner volcano begins to rumble . . .
Volcanos are powerfully creative. They bring new things to the surface, including whole islands. The beauty of Hawaii was once just an idea buried deep inside the earth. But a volcano must regularly allow the lava to flow or the inner pressure will build.
In a similar way, each of us have our own inner source of creativity. We have thoughts we want to express. We want our ideas to bubble forth and take shape. We want to create our own beautiful “new lands.”
But too often we let our ideas fizzle and fade away. We tell ourselves we don’t have time for something new, something different. We get mired down in our same old routine, our same old habits. And our inner pressure builds.
We need to let the volcano blow.
It’s pretty easy to think of some common ways we can practice our creativity. Painting, writing, arts & crafts immediately come to mind. And if these are the types of things you’re drawn to, what are you waiting for? You don’t have to win any awards or even show anyone else what you’ve done. Get a sketchpad. Start a journal. Build a scrapbook.
Artsy stuff not your thing? No problem. There are countless ways to put your creativity into action. How about:
- Rearrange your furniture
- Make a change to that same old recipe
- Wear a t-shirt with a message you like
- Don’t buy a greeting card, make one
- Find a cool plant for that bare corner
- Arrange fresh flowers in an old mason jar
- Build your own unique playlist in iTunes
- Construct your own special sandwich
- Take a different route home from work
- Design a tattoo (and even have it done if you want!)
- Put a meaningful statue in your garden
- Print and frame a great quote & put it on your desk
See? You can apply creativity to anything.
The process of creating can be very therapeutic. It enables us to put our own personal stamp on our lives. It allows us to express ourselves and show our personality to the world. And as we practice our creativity, we provide an outlet for the frustrations and pressure of everyday life.
Go ahead, create something, Anything. Then, take a moment and acknowledge your creation. Feels good doesn’t it? Now, do some more. Tap into your inner volcano and let your creativity flow.

A wonderful reminder, Steve, that we all carry creativity, just in different forms. I know that I feel immensely better when I am in the creative flow of writing, but just opening my mind to new ideas is creative too; creating a new thought pattern.
I’m in the midst of brainstorming some branding ideas for Atticus and may enlist your help, if you are game…
Hey Heidi. Yep, the act of creating something just flat makes you feel good. And an open mind is a good thing to have in every circumstance!
I’m a big fan of brainstorming. It’s a great way to unleash creativity. I’d love to kick around ideas with you!
Great post, Steve! I love the image of creativity bubbling forth and how the number of ways we can be creative is endless, from simple little tweaks to huge explosive creations!
Thanks Emma. We are all infinitely creative, whether we realize it or not. In virtually every moment we are creating – from a simple thought to a world changing action.
